North Port Quay

North Port Quay will be a self-sustainable port-city community built on reclaimed seabed adjacent to the bustling port of Fremantle in Western Australia.

Proposed to become the world’s first carbon-free development, it will incorporate 10,000 dwellings, commercial outlets, public facilities and more than 2,200 boat moorings. At 345 ha, it will be one of the largest marina developments in the Southern Hemisphere.

Client
Strzelecki Holdings is well-known in Western Australia for successful commercial and residential developments along Australia’s ‘Sunset Coast,’ including Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Scope of Work
To develop the North Port Quay concept and deliver the $16billion project from conception to community consultation to approvals and final construction.

Challenges
Securing approval from the local community, the wider Western Australian population and the relevant Government, planning and environmental bodies will involve a major communication and stakeholder engagement effort.

It also presents significant engineering hurdles – reclaiming land from sparsely vegetated seabed. Meeting the project’s exacting sustainability goals will require outstanding project management.

Innovations and Solutions

  • Incorporating the very latest solar, wave, wind and thermal energy technology, the project will be a world showcase for sustainable innovation.

  • As a proposed carbon-free development, it will be built out of environmentally-friendly geopolymer construction materials and stone shipped down the coast by barge to reduce transportation-related emissions.

  • The development will be “future-proofed” against rising sea levels and 100-year storm events by a 3.5km, 5m high breakwater.

Outcomes
Providing long-awaited facilities for Western Australia’s substantial boating community, North Port Quay will incorporate 80 per cent public access, provide premium and affordable housing, community amenities and generate substantial economic and tourist benefits for the people of Fremantle and the State of Western Australia.
